The Untold Story of Hera Pheri: From Missed Castings to Meme Immortality.

When people talk about great comedies in Indian cinema, Hera Pheri will always pop up first but do you know that behind its laugh-a-minute plot lies a backstory filled with remakes, last-minute cast changes, and unexpected turns that shaped its legendary status.

I know you’ve probably read countless articles about this gem. But have you ever wondered what went into the making of it? Something special, something interesting, something so crazy any of these factors can apply here.

Hera Pheri: A Cult Hit That Changed the Narrative of Comedy in India.

Did you know that Hera Pheri, the iconic comedy film we all adore, is actually part of a much longer cinematic journey? It all began in 1989 with a Malayalam film called Ramji Rao Speaking, which was directed by the legendary duo Siddique and Lal. After working together on a few successful projects, they eventually went their separate ways. One half of the duo, Siddique Ismail, later went on to direct the Salman Khan starrer Bodyguard.

The movie was adapted into Hera Pheri by Priyadarshan in 2000, but the storyline has since been recycled many times in Indian cinema.

But the origins go even deeper. Ramji Rao Speaking was inspired by a Gujarati play of 1985 called Khel and here’s the twist that the play was actually made by none other than Paresh Rawal. Yes, the very same actor who has go on to play the unforgettable Babu Bhaiya in Hera Pheri. Paresh Rawal himself revealed this interesting connect in his recent interview with a news channel.

If you think that was the end of the chain, nope think again! There’s even a Hollywood film from 1971 called The Man Run, whose plot shares uncanny similarities with Hera Pheri, which makes this story a true globe-trotter of an idea.

Remakes in other languages.

It was not remade just in Hindi, but across various Indian languages. In 1990, the film was remade in Tamil by producer Fazil under the title Arangetra Velai. In 2002, it got a Telugu makeover by director Shiva Nageshwar Rao, who named it Dhana Lakshmi I Love You. The same year saw an Odia version called Wrong Number, and by 2004, the Kannada industry had its own version named Trin Trin.

The journey didn’t stop there. In 2016, Sujit Guha remade it in Bengali, and in 2023, it was brought to life again in Punjabi, proving just how timeless and adaptable the story truly is.

But despite so many adaptations across languages and regions, if one remake truly captured the hearts of the audience, became a cultural phenomenon, and stood the test of time it was Priyadarshan’s Hera Pheri. The film that turned Raju, Shyam, and Babu Bhaiya into household names, and still continues to make people laugh across generations

However, Hera Pheri itself was such a cultural phenomenon that it inspired its own set of remakes in other languages after 2000. Hera Pheri was adapted into different versions that stayed true to the characters we all loved.

The Film Was Originally Titled Raftaar before the laughs.

Hera Pheri wasn’t always Hera Pheri. Its original title was Raftaar. A grand launch party was even held under that name in 1996. However, the title changed hands from a shelved Govinda project and eventually became what we now know and love.

In an interview, Priyadarshan revealed that the film was initially named Raftaar. At that point, the movie had more action than comedy.

However, when it was re-scripted, Priyadarshan changed the name to Hera Pheri, that decision didn’t just change the tone it rewrote Bollywood’s comedy playbook.

Casting Headache;

Coming to the casting, Shyam’s character was first offered to Sanjay Dutt. However, due to his ongoing court cases at the time, Sanju couldn’t commit to the film. He suggested Suniel Shetty’s name to Firoz, and that’s how we all got the iconic Shyam we know and love today. It’s hard to imagine anyone else in that role now.

Even Anuradha’s character, played by Tabu, had an interesting casting journey. It was first offered to Karisma Kapoor, who turned it down saying her character lacked depth. Then it went to Mamta Kulkarni, who also passed on it. Eventually, Tabu stepped into the role and made it memorable not just as Shyam’s love interest, but as a character that stayed alive in the audience’s hearts.

And here’s another little-known fact Akshay Kumar actually requested director Priyadarshan for the role of Raju. At the time, Akshay was known primarily for his action films and wanted to break out of that image. Taking on the role of Raju gave him the perfect opportunity to showcase his comic timing, and the rest, as they say, is history.

It’s a legendary replacement that turned out to be a blessing in disguise because of the chemistry between the leads.

Firoz Nadiadwala vs Priyadarshan’s cold war over the year.

Over the years, the magic of Hera Pheri has lived on, but behind the scenes, things weren’t always as perfect as they appeared on screen. In recent times, producer Firoz Nadiadwala has made several statements and shocking revelations in the media, particularly about his fallout with director Priyadarshan. According to Firoz, the film’s iconic song Jab Bhi Koi Haseena was shot without Priyadarshan’s involvement. Not just that, he also claimed that the director was absent during the crucial editing phase of the film. Firoz went on to say that he, along with Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Suniel Shetty, re-edited the entire film, which Priyadarshan had originally turned into a four-hour-long version.

Priyadarshan, on the other hand, has consistently denied these claims. He responded by saying that Firoz doesn’t know what he’s talking about and dismissed the allegations as baseless. Interestingly, Firoz Nadiadwala has never publicly given Priyadarshan credit for Hera Pheri’s success. But when asked about it, Priyadarshan gracefully replied that credit is always given by the audience and that’s something he’s always received and been grateful for.

Post release scenarios.

When Hera Pheri was released on 31st March 2000, it performed just average at the box office. But what it lacked in numbers, it made up for in love. The characters of Raju, Shyam, and Babu Bhaiya quickly found a place in everyone’s hearts. The late Neeraj Vora’s brilliant screenplay and dialogues, combined with Priyadarshan’s sharp direction, were widely praised. It was this love from the audience that brought the trio back together six years later in 2006. This time, Priyadarshan wasn’t at the helm, but Neeraj Vora stepped into the director’s chair. Little would he have imagined that Phir Hera Pheri would go on to become an even bigger hit than the original. The film was a super hit at the box office and built a legacy so strong that, even after 19 years, audiences everywhere still ask the same question when is Hera Pheri coming back?

Hera Pheri 3 started without Akshay kumar in 2015 & other inside stories.

When will Hera Pheri return? That question has echoed for years. The film has begun many times, yet never reached the finish line. Back in 2015, the late Neeraj Vora officially announced the third installment. This time, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham were onboard, along with Babu Bhaiya and Shyam but Raju was missing. The film was announced, a few days of shooting took place, but then everything came to a halt. Officially, it was blamed on financial troubles and script issues. But was that really the only reason? Or is it simply that Hera Pheri cannot exist without Raju? The questions kept growing, but the answer remained the same just as the world feels incomplete without Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, Hera Pheri feels incomplete without the trio of Raju, Shyam, and Babu Bhaiya.

Akshay Kumar’s issue with Firoz Nadiawalla & overnight entry of Kartik Aaryan.

After Neeraj Vora’s passing in 2017, it felt like all hope had died with him. He wasn’t just the brain behind the story he was the heart and soul of the series. With his departure, Hera Pheri 3 slipped into silence.

Years passed, and then came 2022 the year we heard the shocking news that Akshay Kumar had officially exited the project. Fans were heartbroken. Social media erupted with disbelief. Twitter trended, Instagram and Facebook were flooded with nostalgic posts and desperate pleas. And just when it seemed like all was lost, came another twist Kartik Aaryan was announced as part of the film, a news confirmed by none other than Paresh Rawal himself.

Kartik Aaryan did his best to get the Hera Pheri franchise, but God had other plans.

Producers even approached Varun Dhawan along with Kartik Aaryan, but he reportedly declined, saying he could not disrespect Akshay Kumar and that Hera Pheri belongs only to him.

Akshay Kumar’s entry as a producer. And other various issues with Hera Pheri.

But in the end, it was the unwavering love of the fans that brought Akshay Kumar back. He returned, and with him, hope was reborn. So now the question isn’t if it’s when. When will Hera Pheri finally begin again?

When Raju returned, fans rejoiced. But with that joy came a familiar demand bring back Priyadarshan too. However, that was easier said than done. Initially, directors like Indra Kumar, Aneez abazmi and later Farhad Samji were attached to the project, with even a promotional shoot being completed under Samji’s direction. But the troubles didn’t end there. The film soon ran into legal complications, and with producer Firoz Nadiadwala reportedly facing financial issues, Hera Pheri 3 once again seemed to be sinking.

That’s when Akshay Kumar stepped in not just as Raju, but as a co-producer. Taking full charge, he acquired the rights to the film and decided to bring his vision to life. It was Akshay who convinced Priyadarshan to return and helped resolve the long-standing issues with Firoz. The original trio Akshay, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal even came together with Priyadarshan to shoot an announcement promo. Fans were finally on the edge of their seats, believing that the long wait might actually be over.

But just when everything seemed aligned, another twist hit Paresh Rawal reportedly exited the film. At first, people thought it was a publicity stunt. But Hera Pheri doesn’t need publicity stunts it’s already a phenomenon. Then came the shocking news: Akshay Kumar had allegedly filed a case against Paresh Rawal. That revelation shook fans to their core.

People who once passionately waited for Hera Pheri 3 are now filled with frustration and confusion. Questions are everywhere, answers nowhere. The excitement has turned into exhaustion. Now, when someone even mentions Hera Pheri, fans get irritated tired of broken promises and endless delays.

After a few weeks Paresh Rawal returned and resolved all his issues with Akshay Kumar.

Now reports say the film will start in February with the original cast and director Priyadarshan. Let’s hope for the best.
