Bollywood’s Franchise Fever: What’s Coming Next?

Bollywood is currently riding high on the success of franchise films like Gadar 2, Stree 2, and several others. With audience demand at an all-time high, the industry is lining up a storm of sequels and big-budget franchise offerings in the next year.

Major upcoming releases include Housefull 5 and Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, both set to hit theatres next month. War 2 is scheduled for an August release, followed by much-awaited titles like Jolly LLB 3 and Son of Sardaar 2.

The new year will begin with a bang, as Sunny Deol returns in Border 2—a film with massive box office potential. Eid 2025 will see the release of Dhamaal 4, promising yet another dose of entertainment. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Bollywood is currently working on 25 to 30 franchise films, with many more in development.

Imtiaz Ali’s Comeback: Cult Sequels in the Pipeline

Among the most exciting developments is filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s return to some of his most beloved films. Trusted sources confirm that he has begun writing Rockstar 2 and Tamasha 2. While it’s unclear if the original cast will reprise their roles, casting is expected to begin after the scripts are finalized.

Rockstar holds a massive cult following, and Imtiaz is reportedly taking his time to ensure a compelling sequel. Tamasha, too, resonates deeply with youth struggling with identity and purpose, making it a strong candidate for a sequel.

In addition, there’s a buzz around Jab We Met 2. The original film was a landmark in Imtiaz’s career, and even Shahid Kapoor once hinted during the promotions of Udta Punjab that he’d love to see a sequel. However, sources suggest Imtiaz is particularly eager to work with his favorite actor, Ranbir Kapoor, and is trying hard to bring him on board.

will this wait be worth it!

Ranbir Kapoor’s Packed Schedule Until 2028

Ranbir Kapoor, however, has a full slate ahead. He is currently filming Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic romance Love and War, which stars Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. Initially planned for an Eid release, the film is now aiming for a June 2025 release.

Following this, Ranbir will star in Ramayana Part 1, expected to hit theatres around Diwali 2025. Once these projects are complete, he is expected to begin shooting for Dhoom 4.

As for the much-anticipated Animal Park, Sandeep Reddy Vanga will only begin work on it after completing Spirit, as confirmed by producer Bhushan Kumar. With such a jam-packed lineup, Ranbir Kapoor is likely booked solid until 2028.

Final thoughts

Bollywood’s current obsession with franchise films is not just a trend, it’s a full-blown strategy. With a blend of nostalgia, fan-favorite characters, and big-screen spectacles, these films are set to dominate the box office. Whether it’s a long-awaited sequel or a fresh take on a beloved story, the coming years look thrilling for Hindi cinema lovers.
